Markham Ward 8 Councillor Isa Lee Community Event

2021 Fight Hunger Food Drive Challenge

Thank you for your support! The 2021 Fight Hunger Food Drive Challenge has officially wrapped up. It has been absolutely incredible and heartwarming to see the generosity and care coming from our community. I am happy to announce that we raised over 9,500lbs of food, and over $100,000 in donations which have been distributed to 105 Gibson Centre Food Bank, Markham Food Bank and The Food Bank of York Region to help families in need. While the event has ended, let’s keep the spirit of giving going in 2022 by donating directly to food banks to help our community.

I would like to begin by thanking the community for the immense support we received for the Ward 8 COVID-19 Care Package Giveaway last year. Roughly 1,500 families received care packages containing PPEs, essential items and much more to help them stay protected and informed through the pandemic.

While restrictions have eased, the financial toll of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to weigh heavily on families, with many struggling to put food on the table. With Christmas just around the corner, I am hoping that we as a community can come together once again to raise food and money for these struggling families, so that they can have warm and hearty meals with their loved ones this holiday season.

Data collected at a Food Bank shows that it costs approximately $100 to feed a family of four (2 adults and 2 children) for four days, and approximately $200 for one week’s worth of food. My goal is to provide 500 local families in need with food throughout the Christmas week through 105 Gibson Centre Food Bank’s annual Christmas Gift Hamper Program, as well as through York Region Food Bank and Markham Food Bank. We will need to raise $100,000 to make this a reality, and I am confident we will be able to achieve this with the help of our community.
